Women in Jazz Performance & Lecture

November 10 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

***Scroll down for Zoom log in info on November 10th

Women have been involved in jazz since the early 1920s, not just as vocalists, but as
instrumentalists, composers, and arrangers. An understanding of jazz would not be complete
without highlighting the influence and contributions of women—women such as Bessie Smith,
Valaida Snow, Mildred Bailey, Mary Lou Williams, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah

The goal is to provide an understanding particularly of their personal lives, their ability to read music, perform and survive in a time when jazz was considered “a man’s world”. It also
covers the full spectrum of years, genre, recordings, and recognized achievements.

Galen Abdur Razzaq is an extraordinary flutist with an extensive performance career.  He is also a riveting speaker with encyclopedic knowledge of the history of jazz and the Civil Rights Movement.  Galen studied at Berklee College of Music and has a Master’s Degree in Education and Performing Arts from Rutgers University, New Jersey.

The lecture/performance includes the following:
 The program begins with a brief performance by Galen
followed by:
 60 minutes PowerPoint presentation with samples of
artist’s music
 Galen performs at certain intervals of the presentation
 15 minute Q & A

Time: Nov 10, 2021 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)
