SUMMARY:Literati Library Book Club - Good Lord Bird by James McBride
DESCRIPTION:This month’s book is Good Lord Bird by James McBride \n“Henry Shackleford is a young slave living in the Kansas Territory in 1857\, when the region is a battleground between anti- and pro-slavery forces. When John Brown\, the legendary abolitionist\, arrives in the area\, an argument between Brown and Henry’s master quickly turns violent. Henry is forced to leave town—with Brown\, who believes he’s a girl. \nOver the ensuing months\, Henry—whom Brown nicknames Little Onion—conceals his true identity as he struggles to stay alive. Eventually Little Onion finds himself with Brown at the historic raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859—one of the great catalysts for the Civil War. \nAn absorbing mixture of history and imagination\, and told with McBride’s meticulous eye for detail and character\, The Good Lord Bird is both a rousing adventure and a moving exploration of identity and survival.” \nTo sign-up email staff@lambertvillelibrary.org or call 609-397-0275 \n\n\nDate 11/07/2023 (Tue.)\n\n\n\n\nTime 7:00PM – 8:30PM EDT\n\n\nLocation Gallery

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Lauren Braun-Strumfels' "Partners in Gatekeeping: How Italy Shaped US Immigration Policy over Ten Pivotal Years\, 1891-1901" @ the ACME
DESCRIPTION:The event will take place on Saturday\, November 4 from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM at the Acme Screening Room on South Main St. in Lambertville.  \nThe Library and the Lambertville Historical Society will celebrate the launch of Lauren Braun-Strumfels’ new book\, Partners in Gatekeeping: How Italy Shaped US Immigration Policy over Ten Pivotal Years\, 1891-1901 (University of Georgia Press). Lauren will discuss the book\, answer questions and sign copies available for purchase on-site through Farley’s bookshop.  \nLauren is a Lambertville resident\, and an associate professor in the history department at Cedar Crest College. She was also a Fulbright Scholar at Roma Tre University in 2020. \n  \nLearn more about Partners in Gatekeeping: How Italy Shaped US Immigration Policy over Ten Pivotal Years\, 1891-1901 below: \n \nPartners in Gatekeeping illuminates a complex\, distinctly transnational story that\nrecasts the development of U.S. immigration policies and institutions. Lauren\nBraun-Strumfels challenges existing ideas about the origins of remote control by\npaying particular attention to two programs supported by the Italian government\nin the 1890s: a government outpost on Ellis Island called the Office of Labor\nInformation and Protection for Italians\, and rural immigrant colonization in the\nAmerican South—namely a plantation in Arkansas called Sunnyside.\nThrough her examination of these distinct locations\, Braun-Strumfels argues\nthat we must consider Italian migration as an essential piece in the history of how\nthe United States became a gatekeeping nation. In particular\, she details how an\nasymmetric partnership emerged between the United States and Italy to manage\nthat migration.\nIn so doing\, Partners in Gatekeeping reveals that the last ten years of the\nnineteenth century were critical to the establishment of the modern gatekeeping\nsystem. By showing the roles of the Italian programs in this migration system\,\nBraun-Strumfels establishes antecedents for remote control beyond the wellstudied Chinese and Mexican cases

SUMMARY:Book Reading: Kate Gallison's "Broken Sister"
DESCRIPTION:Join local author Kate Gallison for a reading of her book Broken Sister. \nFind out more about her at her blog here! \nRead more about Broken Sister below: \n“When small-town librarian Mallory Mills encounters a strange homeless woman sleeping in her library she is touched to find that the mysterious woman may be her sister\, and horrified to hear the chief of police denounce the woman as a dangerous sociopath. If he is right about Thora McNeill\, Mallory is in danger of losing all her money and possibly her life. If the story Thora tells is true\, Chief Barker is a murderous pedophile with designs on his fiancee’s little girls. Before Mallory discovers who (if anyone) can be trusted to tell the truth she finds out some startling things about her own family\, and even about herself.”

SUMMARY:Library Literati Book Club - "An Immense World: How Animal Sense Reveal the Hidden Realms Around Us" by Ed Yong
DESCRIPTION:‘In An Immense World\, Ed Yong coaxes us beyond the confines of our own senses\, allowing us to perceive the skeins of scent\, waves of electromagnetism\, and pulses of pressure that surround us. We encounter beetles that are drawn to fires\, turtles that can track the Earth’s magnetic fields\, fish that fill rivers with electrical messages\, and even humans who wield sonar like bats. We discover that a crocodile’s scaly face is as sensitive as a lover’s fingertips\, that the eyes of a giant squid evolved to see sparkling whales\, that plants thrum with the inaudible songs of courting bugs\, and that even simple scallops have complex vision. We learn what bees see in flowers\, what songbirds hear in their tunes\, and what dogs smell on the street. We listen to stories of pivotal discoveries in the field\, while looking ahead at the many mysteries that remain unsolved. \nFunny\, rigorous\, and suffused with the joy of discovery\, An Immense World takes us on what Marcel Proust called “the only true voyage . . . not to visit strange lands\, but to possess other eyes.”’ \nCome and discuss the view of the natural world through the eyes of animals around us in Ed Yong’s heralded work\, “An Immense World”. There will be 6-8 copies on hold at the library for check out. Check at the front desk for availability. \nTo sign-up email staff@lambertvillelibrary.org or call 609-397-0275 \n\n\nDate 09/05/2023 (Tue.)\n\n\n\n\nTime 7:00PM – 8:30PM EDT\n\n\nLocation Gallery
