Notary Public
This free service is offered at the library on a limited basis. Our librarian notaries may be involved in other tasks, so please call ahead to check notary availability at (609) 397-0275.
Notarization Requirements
- You need a valid photo ID (a driver’s license, state ID, or passport are best)
- Carefully check your documents to see if you need one or more witnesses. Please provide your own witnesses. Witnesses also need a valid photo ID.
- Your documents must be completed.
- You must make sure it is a document a New Jersey Notary can notarize. New Jersey Notaries cannot notarize international documents.
- Wait to sign your document until you are in front of the Notary. Library Notaries will not notarize a document if it has already been signed.
Guidelines
- Library Notaries are not attorneys licensed to practice law and may not give legal advice.
- Notary Service is not available in the thirty (30) minutes prior to the time of closing.
- Notaries are also unable to provide Signature Guarantees, Medallion Signatures or Medallion Signature Guarantees.
- NJ law requires that notaries must be able to read documents being notarized and be able to communicate directly with the person requesting the service. Library Notaries cannot notarize documents written in languages unfamiliar to them.
- All document signers must personally appear before the notary.
- Library Notaries cannot pre-date or post-date a signature.
- Library Notaries will not provide service if the customer, document, or circumstances of the request for notary service raise any issue of authenticity, ambiguity, doubt, or uncertainty.
