It’s no secret that I love cookbooks. I probably love them more than I love cooking, but cooking is a close second. Here at the library, we try to provide a broad base of cookbooks, from classics, to regional, and sometimes the downright unusual. But sometimes a cookbook comes along that is a real standout.
And we have a new one, just in. Christopher Kimball’s “Cook What you Have” is possibly one of the best cookbooks we’ve acquired this year. It’s got an introduction that clearly explains the book’s intentions, a cool “Have this? Try that!” section where you can quickly find suggestions for what you have on hand. In addition to all that, there is a complete, concise pantry section, providing some staple ingredients and why they are used.
I, along with other staff, have given this book our attention, and I have to say, this is such a handy book, especially for this busy holiday season. The recipes are simple, don’t take a lot of time, and look delicious. So many recipes! They are organised in sections like canned goods, shelf stalwarts (pasta, grains, lentils, and broth boosted) root cellar, frozen vegetables, and so much more. So many things that I already have on hand and can make a quick and delicious meal from. There is even a dessert section!
Frankly, I think I will have a lot of fun with this book. But not right away! I want you to be able to try this out first. Let us know what recipes you like best. I am going to be making Spanish garlic and bread soup because I have a garlic lover at home, but there are so many more that sound just as delicious. Off to the kitchen now…
See you in the stacks
